English poet and novelist Thomas Hardy once said, “A man’s
silence is wonderful to listen to”. This could be taken as a motto of my essay,
as in two of my recordings made for the first assignment I listened to the
silence. Both times it turned out not to be as silent as I imagined. Moreover,
in each of the recordings it is very different. It appeared that my ear very
often does not pay attention to many of the surrounding sounds. The first recording I made at home – in a small and closed
space. When I was making it, I thought that there would be just nothing, but it
appeared that though it was quite in the room, there were also other sounds –
steps, mouse scrolling or car passing near the window. The conclusion that can
be drawn is that the thing we usually assume as silence actually is not so
silent.
I decided to take designs of Soviet ads at the beginning of 20th century. Also, I took a cover of a French magazine "Esquire". The design dates to 1960s.

This
is the ad of a soap. I think it is a good one, as it is harmonius,
unusual - soap is placed on snowy mountains which is unexpected and
makes people associate it with snow, white, clean... The soap is
situated in the middle of a picture which makes us pay attention to it,
but at the same time this position is not very obvious, as it is in
harmony with all the other objects in the picture. At the same time the
style of the poster gives the eye a flow from the moon down to the
soap, mountains and the brand, which is wisely written with warm color
on the picture made of cold colors - this makes contrast and emphasises
the brand better.
My article was published in the Immediacy issue. I looked at the image of the U.S. which was created by mass media and the difference with real picture. Check it in the Publisher or in the Immediacy website
Here is the project we made for our Ideas class. Nick Bongiorno, Lingling Zhu and me :) We contrasted three nations (U.S., the Ukraine and China) in political perspective. The project covers 3 topics: 1. The behaviour of politicians during the "crysis" period - meaning that they become more "simple" and "friendly" to the public 2. Media supression and censorship
3. How politics is conducted in above countries
We were presented this video during one of the lectures. It is really impressive. It made me think and realize what a huge impact new technologies have and how they transform the world...
By 1991 mass media in the Ukraine was state only. After the collapse of Soviet Union and independence of the Ukraine a lot of privately owned media appeared.
Nowadays best media in the country are privately owned. The most popular TV and radio channels, as well as most readable newspapers and magazines are private. There are state TV channels, the biggest of which is Ukrainian First National Channel, but though it is the only channel which is broadcast in all parts of the country, its rating is very low comparing to the other channels. State channels do not have enough money thus their programming is very poor. At the same time private channels have what to offer to the viewer - they can afford themselves to create interesting and bright programs, as well as buy foreign TV shows and soap operas. Only on private channels it is possible to see Oprah's show or Ukrainian versions of "Big Brother", "American Idol", "Swan" or "Dancing with the Stars". Best journalists and "stars" a

According to presentation Andrew Bobrow gave us in class, constructive mode of screen design main features are:
- Pure design. - Uses formal visual attributes. - Constructivist sequences found inmany music videos, TV spots and feature films - The primary focus is about “look”, rather than “story” or “content”. - We use the word “constructive” because it echoes a fascination with the elements of design as they were seen and used just before and after World War II by artists and theorists of the Bauhaus school, as well as proponents of the Dadaist and, of course, the Constructivist movements.
The prerelease advertising for the first film tantalized
consumers with the question, “What is the Matrix?” sending them to the Web in
search of answers. Its sequel, The Matrix
Reloaded (2003), opens without a recap and assumes we have almost complete
mastery over its complex mythology and ever-expanding cast of secondary
characters. It ends abruptly with a promise that all will make sense when we
see the third installment, The Matrix
Revolutions (2003). To truly appreciate what we are watching, we have to do
our homework.
…works are attracting 3 very different kinds of consumers:
“the actively engaged real-time viewers who find suspense and satisfaction in
each single episode; the more reflective long-term audience who look for
coherent patterns in the story as a whole; the navigational viewer who takes
pleasure in following the connections between different parts of the story and
in discovering multiple arrangements of the same material” (Jane
